COMMUNICATIONS

The year I spent at Nichibunken was a most fruitful one for my research. I was able to develop a broader perspective on my research, and was fortunate to receive all manner of research support, for which I am most grateful. I cherish the memories of conversations that were had at welcome parties, lunch meetings, and evening meals. I recall with fondness the advice and support I received from colleagues when I gave my presentation; the admin staff were always most considerate, too.

I treasure nothing so much as the interaction I had with faculty, all of whom have their own individual research interests, and with the many scholars who had gathered at Nichibunken from across the world. In the intellectual treasure house that is Nichibunken, I certainly felt a powerful "spiritual force" at work. And that feeling eventually bore fruit in the presentation I delivered on the theme of "the force of the spirit."

Nichibunken is in a quiet, comfortable mountainous setting. I experienced the passage of the four seasons at the Hana no Mai Park and the Katsurazaka Park. When I tired of research, I walked in the wild bird sanctuary behind Nichibunken, and strolled through the bamboo grove that leads down to Matsuo Taisha. Those were the days! This year deeply affected me in so many ways: research-wise and in terms of my daily life, intellectually and physically, too.

My family accompanied me on this sabbatical at Nichibunken. They too were sustained by the kindness and consideration of faculty members and the admin staff. They got to experience Kyoto culture to the full, as well as the unique ambience at Nichibunken. As the time for our departure approached, I felt ever more inspired by the beautiful snow scenes in Ōeyama. During those few days of heavy snow, I made a little snowman with my family. This remains a precious memory.
