- Rōdō to shintai no taishū bunka (The Popular Culture of Labor and the Human Body)
This collection of essays builds on the outcomes of the Japanese Popular Culture Research Project, which found that many aspects of postwar popular culture and aesthetics emerged during the war. The essays here explore postwar popular culture as a continuation of wartime culture, and focus on the physicality and bodily expressions found, for example, in film, ballet, the singing-voice movement, and costumed announcers. The authors’ critical gaze is directed not only at Japan, but also at its former colonies. This is the sister volume to Undō toshite no taishū bunka (Popular Culture as Movement).
