These two edited volumes feature essays by some 36 specialists hailing from across the spectrum of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. This collection serves as a major compilation of studies based on the Nichibunken International Joint Research Project, Shintai imeeji no sōzō to tenkai: Iryō, bijutsu, minkan shinkō no hazama de (Imagining and Developing Images of the Body in Medicine, Art, and Folk Religion) that continued from April, 2018 to March, 2022, led by Manami Yasui and Lawrence Marceau. While the current pandemic was not envisioned until 2020, the editors were able to incorporate pandemic issues, and also organize an exhibition entitled, “Constructing Images of the Body: Considering Folklore, Medical Practice, and Art in a Pandemic Era”, extending the project from 3 to 4 years. The results are found throughout the collection.
