Taikō bunka shi: reisenki Nihon no hyōgen to undō (Countercultural Histories: Expression and Activism in Cold War Japan)
Ōsaka University Press, October 2021.
Japan, a special space where freedom of expression was restricted under the East Asian cold war regime confronted division and pressure. Artists in search of counterculture, of an alternative way not premised on subordination to the US, as they faced the diverse contradictions implicit in nuclear weapons, American bases, diplomacy in Asia, and rapid economic growth. What counter culture did they develop in producing their array of work: literature, art, film, and drama? This volume explores the rich potential for expression and imagination.
