This volume is the report of the Nichibunken team research project “Debates on the Origins of the Japanese Language: Light and Shadow in the History of Japanese Linguistics.” The essays compiled examine, in line with the history of Japanese linguistics, the debates about how the Japanese language came into being and includes considerations from the fields not only of comparative linguistics but also the history of Japanese linguistics and the science of human evolution.
