Rather, it is the English word for the type of orange known as <em>Unsh\u016b mikan<\/em>. These mikan are sold in London supermarkets as \u201cSatsuma.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>The wife of a certain American diplomat delighted in the <em>mikan<\/em> she tried in Kagoshima, and took some home with her. They made their way to Florida, and began to be cultivated in America.<\/p>\r\n<p>At the start of the twentieth century, several regions that cultivated the <em>mikan<\/em> changed their names to \u201cSatsuma.\u201d From such regions, <em>mikan<\/em> spread throughout the English-speaking world. Eventually, the <em>mikan<\/em> themselves came to be known as \u201cSatsuma.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>Did you know that in Europe, the \u201cPocky\u201d sticks made by Glico are known as \u201cMikado\u201d? Why not take a photo of yourself standing outside a restaurant called \u201cShogun,\u201d holding a \u201cSatsuma\u201d and a \u201cMikado\u201d?
