While staying there, I would often hear stories connected to the Portuguese language. This is one such story.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Japanese express thanks with the word <em>arigat\u014d<\/em>. The Portuguese expression for thanks is <em>obrigado.<\/em> And the Japanese <em>arigat\u014d <\/em>has its roots in <em>obrigado<\/em>\u2026<\/p>\r\n<p>Maybe you think I am joking. But while in Brazil I often heard that the origin of <em>arigat\u014d <\/em>was <em>obrigado.<\/em> Some told me in all seriousness that <em>obrigado<\/em> entered the Japanese language thanks to the sixteenth century trade between Japan and Portugal.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Japanese word <em>arigatashi,<\/em> the precursor of <em>arigat\u014d<\/em>, was around long before any encounter with the Portuguese. There is a possibility, though, that <em>arigatashi <\/em>was overlain with <em>obrigado<\/em> and morphed into <em>arigat\u014d<\/em>. In my advanced years, I now think that, to be agreeable, I should probably have acknowledged as much.
